December , 2001

December meeting was all about wireless standards and the what's around the corner in terms of bandwidth you will be able to access on your handheld units.  We talked about 2.5G coming out very soon (with speeds around 19k) and 3G (long term as new hardware is needed on the cellular towers)... CDPD vs CDMA technology and more.

November 1, 2001

This meeting marked our 1st Anniversary (Our Very First User Group Mtg was back in November of 2000) and we celebrated with a BANG ....  We had Derek Brown from Microsoft in town.  Derek is one of the heads of the MS Mobile Division...

Robert and Andy once again hosted our meeting (at www.innerlink.com). The meeting was well attended and TONS of stuff happened...Kirby and Earl bought the first CFtype 1 Wireless cards from SYMBOL and we had 3 ipaqs and a laptop running wirelessly along with Andy's laptop on a switch (all going at the same time... very cool....).We discussed the Health Care seminar recently held at the Radisson Hotel and examined ways that we could improve our presentation. We discussed the upcoming Microsoft Mobile Experience scheduled for November 1, 2001 at the Ramada Inn in Monroeville and met for one hour after the regular meeting to discuss assignments for the various board members.

September 20, 2001

On September 20, 2001, the Western Pennsylvania Association of Health Care Professionals sponsored a seminar at the Radisson Hotel, on Mall Boulevard in Monroeville Pennsylvania, exploring the utility of PDAs in the health care industry. The seminar was attended by a small but enthusiastic group of professionals from a diverse cross section of the health care industry. Representatives were on hand from Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Palm and the Pittsburgh Mobile Technology Users Group to answer questions and/or demonstrate products. The seminar was kick off by a very informative lecture by two young doctors from the Pittsburgh area; one who uses a PocketPC in his duties on a daily basis and the other who uses a Palm. After the doctors were finished, our own Jennifer Wrobleski conducted an excellent presentation on the features of the PocketPC, doing a fine job of spontaneously and seamlessly tailoring her subject matter to cover areas that the doctors omitted. Jennifer also presented a slide show of screen shots from a PocketPC and covered areas such as wireless networking and accessories. A good time was had by all, and afterward we answered questions from several of the attendees.

Our meeting this month was held at the home of two of our members.  The room was ample, the pizza was good, and we even had a couple of new members show up as well.  Topics of discussion were Earl's rumors and handouts (as usual), some demos for our new members of beaming via IR, game demos, a discussion of the new iGolf review submitted by Bob, the normal wireless discussions, a discussion about our upcoming presentation at a local healthcare organization, and more.  We all got to handle and check out the new @migo P600C, thanks to the folks at URThere, who graciously sent us a demo to review.  Nice machine!  We also talked stylii, in conjunction with a new review of some nifty pen/stylus combinations that will soon be posted here.

Below are a few pictures from the September meeting.

August 2, 2001

Another great meeting for the month of August.  As usual, Earl handed out some printouts of new and interesting information (including info on new PocketPC models coming out soon).  We discussed staffing for our upcoming presentation at the Healthcare event next month.  Robert, Kirby, Victor and Jennifer will be staffing the booth with Jennifer giving the presentation.  Chad demo'd a new game from Ziosoft called Pocket Athlete.  Earl also got in on the game demo act this month, and demo'd the Mark, by Flux software.  Earl also gave out a couple of Stylii (styluses?) from Stylus Plus, for reviews, so watch the product review page for those.  Chad presented his favorable review of Lupin's Diary, and Jennifer confirmed that we have reserved the domain name www.pittsburghmobiletech.com for our website, and that will soon be our url (as soon as we figure out how to redirect it to our web space.  We did a bit of beaming, with agendas and such, and as usual, we discussed wireless solutions (both bluetoot and LAN solutions).  We also welcomed Dave, a new member who was looking for information and demos so he could decide which Pocket PC to buy.  A great time was had by all.

This month's meeting was again, the best yet.  We had more people in attendance than ever, and had an interesting and fun meeting.  Andy and Robert passed out some handouts, and discussed their reviews of some software products that will soon be seen on our reviews page.  Chad demo'd a bunch of freeware games using his Casio connected to Andy's laptop and then to our wall projector, via CERemote, a nice program that lets us do large scale demos.  Earl gave a presentation on the various options for wireless communication with PocketPC's (thanks to our sister user group in Washington, D.C.), and Kirby demo'd his new wireless modem and Omnisky access to browse the web wirelessly during our meeting.  We also discussed options for the web page, some software was distributed for testing and reviews, and future plans for our organization.  Earl also distributed some nifty free PocketPC t-shirts from Microsoft (thanks Beth and Derrick).  Finally, we discussed setting up a table at the upcoming Pittsburgh Healthcare Professionals meeting during September of this year.  As always, here are a few photos:

June 7, 2001

June's Meeting was not as crowded as last month's, but the quality and amount of information exchanged was the best yet. The quiet of Denny's Restaurant allowed us to share thoughts and move around very easily. The only downside was the lack of a white wall to use the computer screen projector that Robert graciously brought in. (As far as the pictures being secured... we had George check it out, and yes the picture are permanently screwed in the walls at Denny's ;) The group did however use the large screen of Andy's laptop to display the IPAQ screens. It worked wonderfully and everyone was able to see the demo of some programs that included the latest version of Portable Travel Guide, which has the Pittsburgh area and shows restaurants and entertainment location near you and does routing as well. Also the latest version of Snoopsoft's Dashboard (watch for next month when someone will be reviewing Lupins Diary - a different way to look at the same data as dashboard).  Kirby showed off a multitude of stylii, including conversion inserts for parker pens to convert any pen into a stylus.  He also showed off the latest Casio Digital Camera watch by showing us photos taken displayed on his IPAQ.  We drafted Kirby and George to do the next user profiles (thanks guys). And as you read this Chad will have added the new sections for Software and Hardware reviews. Next location will be at Andy and Roberts building (www.innerlink.com) at 6:45 PM but will be the second Thursday due to holiday weekend. Andy will be helping Chad with redesigning the message board to retain older messages. We then gave away full versions of Shadowgate Game (Kirby) and ZioGolf + JS Landscape to Andy (look for reviews on the giveaways soon). Next month look for I-Golf 1.02 and Lupin's Diary giveaways. We should also have the Microsoft user group kits in which will be given to the first 15 to attend the next meeting. August we will have a giveaway of some great Styluses (stylii?) from www.stylusplus.com. So looks to be a busy summer for the group.

May 15 - 16, 2001

On Tuesday May 15, 2001 (Victor and George) and Wednesday, May 16, 2001 (Victor and Earl) staffed a table top presentation at the Microsoft Big Day Event.  Tuesday was at Monroeville, PA and Wednesday was next to the Pittsburgh Airport.

The event was attended by over 170 people in total and the group passed out hand outs and cards with the next meeting information and our website information printed on them. There seemed to be about 20 to 30 people who expressed interest.  It is anticipated that we will be adding at least 2 to 3 new members.  The event was targeted at small businesses and showcased Microsoft's software solutions and had presentations by Compaq's Regional Hardware representative.  The end of the show was a demonstration of the IPAQ and pocket pcs in general.

May 3, 2001

Our April meeting having not produced anything much worth reporting, I am proud to announce that our May meeting was the best ever!  We changed the meeting day, time, and place, and it seemed to work.  We not only had four more folks in attendance (two of whom were named this month's featured users), we enjoyed the food and atmosphere at the Regent Square Tavern in Edgewood, PA.

As always, Earl passed out t-shirts to the new members, and copies of news articles to everyone.  We beamed around contacts from the new members, and beamed around the agenda as well.  After a lengthy and spirited discussion of various news items, rumors, new product announcements, and a general sharing of all things Pocket PC, Earl pulled out the new Pocket PC magazine, which again lists our organization in its user groups section.  Chad demo'd a new game called EcoAct (or Eco Fight), which is a free download (see links page) and managed to share the file with the new Casio user present.  Earl then got in on the games act with a short demo of Shadowgate in landscape mode on his Ipaq.  The device count for this meeting was 4 Ipaq's, 2 Casio's, one Jornada, one Jornada handheld, and <ahem> one Palm.

We decided to keep the meeting nights on Thursday for now, and to rotate the location around to various parts of the city, until we find somewhere we like best, or get sick of changing the location.  As such, next month's meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. on June 7, 2001, at the Monroeville, PA Denny's restaurant.  The room is already reserved.  See everyone next month!  Someone bring a digital camera so we can add more pics to the web page!

March 9, 2001

The fifth meeting of the Pittsburgh Area Mobile Technology User Group was a momentous occasion, in that it was a big step in our journey toward representing a cross-section of the computing public.  To elaborate, it was our first meeting with a woman in attendance, and our first meeting with a child in attendance.  Both were welcome and participated.  Topics discussed at the meeting were customizing calendar entries, flash media content and readers, a game demo of V-Rally, hardware demos of the Otter waterproof case and the Grinder Gear soft case shown in the photos below, more demos of the handy-dandy Targus stowaway keyboards for the Compaq and H-P PocketPC's (also shown below) and even a demo of a stuffed toy that Victor claimed was a Windows CE device (see photo 1 below).  Although we did verify that the Microsoft logo was on the toy, we could not find a WinCE logo anywhere.  We also discussed the use of a C-Pen for scanning in conjunction with a PocketPC, and demo'd some ActiveSky multimedia content (see photo 8 below).  After the meeting, we enjoyed a pleasant dinner at Dingbats restaurant on the ground floor of the lovely Oxford Tower downtown Pittsburgh.

Here are a few photos of our March meeting.  See you all next month!

February 2, 2001

The fourth meeting of the Pittsburgh Area Mobile Technology User Group was possibly its best to date.  Members met for about two hours, and discussed a number of topics over pizza and other snacks, including the new version of Ziogolf (a brief demo was given), the Palmax @migo pocketPC, wireless solutions, bluetooth, and other issues.  Many contacts were exchanged between new and old members, and we even tested Conduits Software's Peacemaker application, by exchanging some information with the one palm os unit that somehow managed to slip into the room.  Our newest member, Justin, gave an informal presentation on the capabilities and outlook for bluetooth (which we were all very interested in) and discussed the possibility of bringing some bluetooth devices to the next meeting to set up a short range network and test the capabilities of the system.

Earl also passed out some hard copies of information about one of the new Super Nintendo Emulators (check the links page for details), the new greyscale Ipaq, and lots of other topics of interest.

It was announced that one of the members (Chad) will be presenting a talk on the PocketPC and its capabilities before the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, on February 22, 2001 in Philadelphia, as part of a presentation on handheld computing.

It was also announced that due to the pending move of the offices of Thorp, Reed & Armstrong to their new location at the Oxford Center, next month's meeting will be postponed for one week, until March 9, 2001, at the new office location.  Specific directions will be posted on the events section of this web page soon.

Finally, we also want to send a greeting out to the Cajun Clickers (a PocketPC SIG from Louisiana, from what we understand), who sent us a very nice email saying they liked our website.  Hello down south!

Here are a few photos of our February meeting.  See you all next month!

January 5, 2001

The third meeting of the Pittsburgh Area Mobile Technology User Group was held on January 5, 2001.  We spent almost three hours discussing new programs, giving tutorials on programs and setups, eating pizza and snacks, and enjoying our PocketPC's.  We browsed the new MobilePlanet catalog, discussed the various wireless applications presently and soon-to-be available, games (of course), improvements to the web page, and how to set up the web page as an AvantGo channel.  Earl gave a demo of his new Targus stowaway keyboard for the Ipaq (which worked flawlessly).  We discussed a new infrared service for airports, which purports to give information and other goodies at airport data centers, called Adalive.   Apparently, this service is going to demo right here at our Pittsburgh Airport.  More information can be found at www.adalive.com

Chad also presented some information on the upcoming CMU Interface conference, at which various business and technology issues will be discussed, and which is a national conference.  It is scheduled for March 16 and 17, and more information on this can be found at www.cmuinterface.com

Our next meeting will again be held on February 2, 2001 at the offices of Thorp, Reed & Armstrong -- the same location as the previous two meetings.  The March meeting will be at the new offices of Thorp, Reed, which will be moving to Oxford Center in early March.

Here are two photos of the keyboard Earl demo's:
